Each team consists of eight robots that specialize as Quarterbacks, Running Backs, Wide Receivers, Centers, Linemen, Kickers and more. The robots are remotely controlled, move on wheels, and play American style football on a field the size of a basketball court.
Robot Football gives students a chance to turn bold ideas into action on the field. By forming a team, you’ll design, build, and compete with your own robots, tackling real-world engineering challenges. The sport pushes the limits of creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving, giving you hands-on experience that carries over to your career after graduation. Beyond competition, Robot Football is a collaborative experience where you learn, innovate, and create something extraordinary with your teammates while preparing for the challenges of the professional world.
To participate in Robot Football, schools must meet a few basic requirements:
Recommended disciplines include Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Computer Science; however, many other disciplines are represented and encouraged! Costs are modest compared to other engineering competitions: a full team of 12 robots (including spares) can be built for around $10,000, while partial teams can start for roughly $600 for a basic lineman robot. Once a full team is built, minimal maintenance costs are about $2,500 annually, plus travel. Teams will enter as a New Team and not have to pay any dues, but future growth will yield the following dues structure:
New teams are encouraged to explore the Starter Robot Build Kit, which provides step-by-step guidance for building a first robot and sets a foundation for long-term success. Apply here to join the league and start building your team.
Lead your school in designing, building, and competing with robots in this fast-growing sport. Robot Football challenges your skills, creativity, and teamwork while giving you hands-on experience in engineering, strategy, and problem-solving. Schools from across the country are forming teams to compete in a full season that builds to the Collegiate Robotic Football Playoffs, where every program has a shot at claiming the National Championship and bringing the Brian Hederman Memorial Trophy home. Start your team, push the limits of innovation, and put your school on the map as a leader in this exciting, fast-growing sport.
